Gohmann Asphalt
Kentucky Department of Transportation: June – July 2007.

All of Gohmann Asphalt and Construction’s divisions took part in this project.

This was a $53,000,000 project for the complete reconstruction of I-64 from I65 to the Sherman Minton Bride, approximately 9 miles. The construction on this project was required to be completed during three weekend closures and one thirty day closure. Gohmann completed this project ahead of schedule earning the maximum bonus of $2,000,000.

During the first three weekend closures the majority of the western two miles of the project was required to be completed. This work included the removal of the existing pavement, removal and replacement of the subgrade then reconstruction of the highway with Hotmix Asphalt Pavement.

During the thirty day road closure, this project required the removal and replacement of all bridge joints, all bridge decks were milled, patched and all barrier wall was either replaced or patched and sealcoated. Also all bridge decks were overlaid with a Rosphalt, a waterproof asphalt membrane and all concrete driving lanes were removed and replaced with Hotmix Asphalt Pavement. This project was successfully completed ahead of schedule.

This project involved a completely new alignment to connect I-64 to the SR 37 interchange (exit 79) north 6.0 miles to just south of the Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge, in Perry/Crawford Counties in Indiana, approximately 50 miles west of downtown Louisville, KY.

The design is a good example of a two lane, paved shoulder, full depth HMA, with a thirty foot clear zone. The design speed of 60 mph and grades up to 4% through wooded rolling terrain have produced a new roadway with beautiful scenery. This project demonstrates the quality and smoothness that can be achieved with the use of HMA pavement.

New US 231 between I-64 and the Ohio River in Spencer County, Indiana. Beginning at SR 66 (Ohio River) northbound 4.8 miles ending at a point 1.15 miles south of SR 70.

This project involved the construction of a new dual-lane, partial access control highway that replaced a two-lane narrow existing highway. Construction had to be phased on the southbound then northbound sides to maintain existing vehicle traffic and rail traffic into an adjacent power plant.

Pavement design is 14.75" full depth HMA placed on a line stabilized earth sub grade. The full depth pavement design demonstrates the quality, appearance, and rideability that can be achieved with HMA.
